Questions before you buy

What do I need to run it?
An Interactive Brokers account, TWS or IB Gateway running and logged in with the API enabled, and a market data subscription. Level 2 depth needs the matching IBKR depth subscription. Scalpel runs on Windows 10 and 11; a macOS build is on the way.
Does it need a separate data feed?
No third-party feed. Quotes, Level 2, the tape, charts and the scanner all come from your own IBKR connection, and you pay IBKR for market data as usual. Level 2 needs IBKR's depth add-on. Intel uses free public sources: SEC EDGAR, Nasdaq and FINRA.
How do I know if my IBKR account has Level 2?
Look at the market data subscriptions in your IBKR Client Portal settings. For Level 2 on US stocks you need a depth package such as Nasdaq TotalView. Without live data, Scalpel shows delayed data and flags it in the app.
Can it place real orders?
Yes, in LIVE mode, as marketable limit orders through your IBKR account, with a red LIVE ORDERS badge in the header. There is no confirm dialog: the mode switch is the gate. It starts in SIM, a paper ledger that fills against the live book, so you can learn the keys first.
Are the stops real orders at IBKR?
No. The stop, the wider backup stop and the take-profit are watched by the app and fire a real exit when price trades through. That keeps them off the book, but it means Scalpel has to be running for them to work.
What happens if Scalpel closes while I hold a LIVE position?
The position stays open at IBKR, but its stops and take-profit stop working until Scalpel is running again. When it restarts, it picks your LIVE positions back up from IBKR. You can always close a position by hand in TWS.
Can it short?
No. Scalpel is long only, and a sell is capped to your net long, so it can never put you short by accident.
Does it trade for me?
No. Scalpel is a manual cockpit: you pick the setup and press the key. It sizes the order, routes it and manages the exit you set.
What does the licence cover?
A lifetime licence for one trader on two machines, with every update. You can free a machine from your account page if you change computers. The app checks the licence each time it starts.
What if it isn't for me?
Ask for a refund within 7 days of purchase and you get the full amount back.
