# Intel shows nothing or SEC filings are off

> Intel chips, shares outstanding or the dilution read are empty: set the SEC contact email, check the Intel tab's source status and the 40-symbol limit.

**In short:**

Intel's SEC filings, dilution reads and shares outstanding stay off until you type a real contact email in **Settings > Intel > Contact email**: the SEC refuses anonymous requests. The status lines at the top of the Intel tab say which source is off or waiting. Intel also follows at most 40 symbols, in this order: what you hold, then your desks, then the IBKR scanner's list.

Intel is built entirely on what you already have and on free public sources: the news and borrow data on your IBKR account, SEC EDGAR, FINRA and Nasdaq. There is no data subscription to buy. That also means each source has its own reason to be quiet, and the Intel tab tells you which.

## Read the status lines

Open **Settings** (`Ctrl`+`,`) and pick **Intel**. Under **Intel (borrow, dilution, catalysts)**, five lines show each source as it is right now.

When everything runs, they read like this:

## SEC filings: off until a contact email is set below

The most common one. Without SEC data there are no filings, no dilution chip or read, no warrant or offering lines, and no shares outstanding (the **SHS OUT** column and market cap in scan panels stay empty).

### 1. Type your email in Contact email

Under **SEC EDGAR**, type a real address you read, such as your own email. It needs an @ and a dot; a placeholder like `you@example.com` is not accepted by the SEC. It is sent only to sec.gov, in each request's header, as the SEC's fair-access rules ask.

### 2. Click Apply

The line changes to **SEC filings: waiting for sec.gov**, then **SEC filings: live** once the first request answers. Dilution reads then fill in as each symbol's filing history loads.

## SEC filings: waiting for sec.gov

The email is set but sec.gov has not answered yet. If it stays like this for minutes, sec.gov is unreachable from your computer (a firewall, proxy or VPN), or it is refusing the requests. Check that the email is a real one and that https://www.sec.gov opens in your browser.

## News: waiting for IBKR

Headlines come from the news providers on your IBKR account, through TWS. This line waits until TWS is connected ([guide 13.1](https://scalpeltrade.com/guides/fix-disconnected)). Once connected it lists the providers, for example **News: Dow Jones**. If it stays empty while connected, your account has no API news providers turned on: check your news subscriptions in IBKR's Client Portal.

## IBKR borrow file: loading

The shortable-shares and fee file comes from IBKR's public FTP server (ftp2.interactivebrokers.com). If it never loads, a firewall is blocking FTP. Borrow reads still work from IBKR's live shortable data; the file adds the borrow fee and the shares available.

## OpenAI: key rejected, keyword grading until it changes

An OpenAI key is optional and the only paid extra, a few cents a day. Without one, **OpenAI: no key, keyword grading only** is normal: headlines are graded by keywords, and no warrant or offering prices are pulled from filings. "Key rejected" means OpenAI refused the key: paste a working one under **OpenAI (optional) > API key**. Details in [guide 9.1](https://scalpeltrade.com/guides/set-up-intel).

## Watching 40 symbols

Intel follows at most 40 symbols, picked in this order:

1. Every symbol you hold, in SIM or on your IBKR account.
2. The symbols on your desks.
3. The IBKR scanner's list, from the top, until 40 is reached.

So a name far down a long scanner list may have no chips. Load it on a desk and it moves up the order. A desk that has shown no quote for 15 minutes stops counting.

## Intel shows nothing for one stock

- **The strip under the desk header only shows when there is something to say.** A stock with no fresh news, no dilution risk and no borrow read has no strip. That is a result, not a fault ([guide 9.5](https://scalpeltrade.com/guides/intel-chips)).
- **The master switch is off.** Tick **Enabled** next to **Intel (borrow, dilution, catalysts)**.
- **The stock is new to Intel.** History loads when a symbol is first watched; **News history days** (default 3) sets how far back headlines go, and changes to it apply at the next start.

## Questions

**Why are SHS OUT and the dilution read empty in Scalpel?**

SEC filings are off until you set a real contact email in Settings > Intel. The SEC refuses requests without one.

**Who sees my SEC contact email?**

Only sec.gov. Scalpel sends it in the header of its SEC requests and nowhere else.

**Do I need to pay for any data for Intel?**

No. Intel uses your IBKR account's news and borrow data plus free SEC, FINRA and Nasdaq sources. An OpenAI key is optional.

**How many symbols does Intel follow?**

Up to 40: what you hold first, then your desks, then the IBKR scanner's list.

**Why does News say waiting for IBKR?**

Headlines come through TWS. Connect TWS or IB Gateway and the line lists your news providers.
