**In short:**

When IBKR hotkeys do not work, the cause is almost always one of five things: the stock's row or the right window is not selected, the key builds the order but **Transmit the order instantaneously** is unticked, a confirmation or precautionary popup is waiting for a click, the order is not allowed to fill outside regular hours so it sits in the pre-market, or the limit price is priced off the wrong side of the book. Work through the checklist below in order; each cause has its symptom and the exact fix in TWS.

You set up a buy key, a stock starts to move, you press it, and nothing happens. Or something happens, but no fill. IBKR Campus pages on hotkeys collect comments from traders who say exactly this: that they cannot buy or sell with a key combination, and that it makes momentum trading on IBKR feel impossible. Most of the time the hotkey is working as configured. It is just configured to do something other than what you expect.

This checklist covers every cause we could confirm in IBKR's own guides and in traders' reports, checked on October 15, 2026. Scalpel is independent and not affiliated with or endorsed by Interactive Brokers.

## Quick diagnosis

| What you see | Most likely cause | Jump to |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Nothing at all happens | No row selected, wrong window, or the key never reached TWS | Causes 1, 3 and 9 |
| An order appears but is not sent | Instant transmit is off, or a popup is waiting | Causes 4 and 5 |
| The order is sent but sits unfilled | Outside RTH not set, or the price is not marketable | Causes 6 and 7 |
| A warning about shorting on a sell | The key sells more than you hold | Cause 8 |
| Hotkeys work in TWS but not in your trading app | Read-Only API | Cause 11 |

![A flow chart for a hotkey that fails: if no order appears, check causes 1, 3 and 9; if it is not sent, causes 4 and 5; if it does not fill, causes 6 and 7; a shorting warning is cause 8 and an app refused by the API is cause 11](https://scalpeltrade.com/images/blog/ibkr-hotkeys-not-working/diagnosis-flow.webp)

## IBKR hotkeys not working: the checklist

### 1. No row selected, or the wrong window has focus

**Symptom:** You press the key and nothing happens, or the order goes to a different stock.

**Cause:** TWS hotkeys act on the selected instrument. IBKR describes Buy as creating "a buy order for the selected asset" and Close Position as working on "the selected contract" ([IBKR hotkey actions](https://www.interactivebrokers.com.hk/php/webhelp/Setting_User_Preferences/hotkey.htm)). If no row is highlighted, or focus is in a window that does not take the key, the press goes nowhere. Traders on Elite Trader report custom keys that only work from a watchlist, not from the chart. Traders on IBKR Campus report that chart hotkeys stop after any click elsewhere until they click the ticker again, and IBKR has said a fix is on its roadmap.

**Fix:** Click the stock's row in your watchlist (or the position's row in your portfolio, for Close Position) right before you press. In Mosaic, put the watchlist, chart and order entry in one color link group so one click selects the stock everywhere. If keys only work from one window, trade from that window.

### 2. You are in IBKR Desktop, not TWS

**Symptom:** You followed a TWS guide, but the menus and options do not match what you see.

**Cause:** IBKR Desktop is a separate, newer app. Its hotkeys live in **Settings > Hotkeys**, split into Platform Controls and Order Entry, and IBKR's replies on Campus say it has "only basic hotkeys" for now, with advanced keys in its development queue ([IBKR Campus: Using Hotkeys](https://www.interactivebrokers.com/campus/trading-lessons/ibkr-desktop-hotkeys/)).

**Fix:** Set up keys in the app you trade from. The **Transmit the order instantaneously** option and everything else in this checklist are TWS settings (Mosaic or Classic).

### 3. The key belongs to a tool, or you are in Rapid Order Entry

**Symptom:** A key works in one place and not another.

**Cause:** Hotkeys created from the tool drop-down on the Hotkeys page (ChartTrader, BookTrader, OptionTrader) only work inside that tool. And IBKR's guide says standard hotkeys do not work inside the Rapid Order Entry panel ([TWS hot keys](https://www.ibkrguides.com/traderworkstation/hot-keys.htm)).

**Fix:** Open **Global Configuration > Hotkeys** (from **File** in Mosaic, **Edit** in Classic) and check whether the key is a global hotkey or a tool hotkey. Record a global one if you want it to work everywhere, and click out of the Rapid Order Entry panel before you press.

### 4. The order is built but never transmitted

**Symptom:** Pressing the key creates an order, but it waits in your orders with a **Transmit** or **Update** button.

**Cause:** **Transmit the order instantaneously** is unticked. That is the default: the key builds the order and leaves it for you to send.

**Fix:** In **Global Configuration > Hotkeys**, select the shortcut under Configured Shortcuts, click **Configure**, open the **Customize** tab and tick **Transmit the order instantaneously** at the bottom ([IBKR: instantaneous transmit](https://www.ibkrguides.com/traderworkstation/create-instantaneous-transmit.htm)). Keys that transmit instantly show an asterisk next to their name. For Close Position, the same option is in its Customize area.

### 5. A confirmation or precaution popup is waiting

**Symptom:** The key works, but a dialog opens, sometimes behind another window, and the order waits for a click.

**Cause:** Three different popups can stop a hotkey order:

- **The order confirmation.** Turned off by ticking **Don't display this message again** at its bottom left. Hidden messages are managed in **Global Configuration > Messages** ([IBKR Campus: Messages and Sound Manager](https://www.interactivebrokers.com/campus/trading-lessons/messages-sound-manager/)).
- **Precautionary warnings.** An order above the share or dollar limits in **Presets > Stock > Precautionary Settings** always shows a warning with **Override and Transmit**.
- **Close Portion of Positions.** This action always opens a pane, then a Proceed warning. It has no instant transmit option.

**Fix:** Untick the confirmation and set your precautionary limits just above your largest normal order, so the warning only fires on a real mistake. Do not set them to zero, which turns the checks off. If the confirmation keeps appearing for hotkeys even after you hid it, which several traders report, IBKR points to its FAQ on [disabling the order preview](https://www.interactivebrokers.com/faq?id=34483582) and asks for a support ticket. For scale-outs in one keypress, use a Sell key with a fixed size instead of Close Portion of Positions.

### 6. Outside RTH is not set, so pre-market orders sit

**Symptom:** At 07:30 ET your buy is sent, accepted, and never fills. The same key works after 09:30.

**Cause:** The order is not allowed to fill outside regular trading hours (RTH), so IBKR holds it for the open. A trader on Campus asked why his keys only worked in regular hours; IBKR's answer was to change the hotkey's time in force settings.

**Fix:** In **Global Configuration > Presets > Stock**, under **Timing**, tick **Allow order to be activated, triggered, or filled outside of regular trading hours**, then **Apply** and **OK**. Check it on your next order: the confirmation shows **Outside Regular Trading Hours: True**, and the Time in Force drop-down shows **Fill Outside RTH** ticked ([IBKR Campus: Trading Outside RTH](https://www.interactivebrokers.com/campus/trading-lessons/trading-outside-regular-trading-hours-rth/)). An order already sent without it cannot be changed; cancel and resend. Also make sure the key sends a limit order: outside regular hours, exchanges accept limit orders only ([glossary: pre-market](https://scalpeltrade.com/guides/glossary#pre-market)).

### 7. The price is not marketable

**Symptom:** The order is live, but it rests below the ask while the stock runs away.

**Cause:** The key prices the buy off the bid, the last trade or the midpoint, or uses a negative offset. That is a resting order, not an entry. In a fast move, even a buy at the exact ask can be left behind.

**Fix:** On the buy key's Customize tab, price the limit off the **Ask** plus an offset, for example 0.05 to 0.10 on a fast small cap. Price the sell key off the **Bid** minus an offset. This is a [marketable limit](https://scalpeltrade.com/guides/glossary#marketable-limit): it reaches across to the other side but caps what you pay. A limit that still does not fill means the price moved past it; more in [fix an order that did not fill](https://scalpeltrade.com/guides/fix-order-not-filled).

### 8. The size is not what you think

**Symptom:** The order is the wrong size, or a sell warns that the stock is not available for shorting.

**Cause:** A hotkey's **Size** is **Default** (your preset quantity), **Absolute** (a fixed number) or **Available** (whatever size shows on the ask or bid, which can be 100 shares or 50,000). A Sell key with an Absolute size does not know what you hold, so it can sell more than your position. A trader on Campus who used **Reverse Position** to scale out got a "not available for shorting" warning, because reversing a long means selling it and then going short.

**Fix:** Set your standard quantity in **Presets > Stock > Size**. Use **Close Position** for the last shares, never Reverse Position to get out of a long, and check your position before a second sell press.

### 9. The key never reached TWS

**Symptom:** Nothing happens anywhere, even with the right row selected.

**Cause:** TWS rejects reserved keys such as `Alt` when you record them. Another program can also take the key or the focus first: a NinjaTrader forum thread describes NinjaTrader pulling focus away from TWS windows. On a Mac, a trader on Campus reported that his letter combinations started editing the ticker instead of trading.

**Fix:** Check the key is listed under Configured Shortcuts. IBKR allows any single key, or `Ctrl` or `Shift` with one of the 26 letters. Try the combination in a plain text editor: if something else reacts, another program owns it, so record a different one in TWS.

### 10. There is no live quote to price from

**Symptom:** The order is priced oddly or sits far from the market.

**Cause:** A key priced off the ask needs a live ask. With delayed data, or no quote yet for the stock, there is nothing current to price from.

**Fix:** Make sure the stock shows live, streaming quotes before you press. See [IBKR market data for day trading](https://scalpeltrade.com/guides/ibkr-market-data-for-day-trading) for what to subscribe to.

### 11. Your trading app uses the API in read-only mode

**Symptom:** A third-party trading app shows quotes and your account, but every order is refused.

**Cause:** Apps that trade through the TWS API need **Read-Only API** unticked in **Global Configuration > API > Settings**. It starts ticked.

**Fix:** Untick it, keep **Allow connections from localhost only** ticked, and click **Apply** ([enable the TWS API](https://scalpeltrade.com/guides/enable-tws-api)).

## Still stuck?

IBKR says there is no way to test hotkeys other than using them, so use a paper trading login. Your live and paper logins can hold different settings, so check the keys exist in both. If a key still fails, IBKR asks for a web ticket with your settings. For a full, working key set, see our guide to [TWS hotkeys for day trading](https://scalpeltrade.com/blog/tws-hotkeys-day-trading), and for the wider setup, [day trading on Interactive Brokers](https://scalpeltrade.com/blog/day-trading-interactive-brokers).

## Where Scalpel fits

Scalpel is a keyboard-first desktop cockpit for your own IBKR account, connected through TWS or IB Gateway with the API on. It removes most of this checklist by design. Every trading action is one key with no confirmation dialog, and each key fires on the **focused desk**, the one with the blue outline. The trading keys only fire when no text box has the key, so typing a symbol never places an order.

*Screenshot: D1 is focused: blue outline, and the extra header buttons. D2 is not, so a hotkey press goes to D1. Demo data.*

When a key cannot act, Scalpel says so. With the market closed (before 04:00 or after 20:00 ET, weekends and holidays), a buy or sell key shows **Market closed - orders disabled**. A refused order shows a red toast with the reason, and the voice says "Rejected." See the [hotkeys guide](https://scalpeltrade.com/guides/hotkeys) and [fix a rejected order](https://scalpeltrade.com/guides/fix-order-rejected).

*Screenshot: The market closed: every order bar button greyed out, and the toast a buy key raises. Demo data.*

Scalpel is long only and needs TWS or IB Gateway running with **Read-Only API** off for LIVE orders. Its stops are app-monitored, not resting orders at IBKR, so they only work while Scalpel runs with a live feed.

*Trading carries a significant risk of loss. Nothing here is financial advice.*

## Questions

**Why are my TWS hotkeys not working?**

Usually the stock's row is not selected, the key builds the order without transmitting it, or a confirmation popup is waiting. Select the row first, tick Transmit the order instantaneously on the key's Customize tab, and hide the order confirmation.

**Why does my IBKR hotkey not work in the pre-market?**

The order is not allowed to fill outside regular trading hours, so IBKR holds it until 09:30 ET. Tick the outside regular trading hours box in Global Configuration, Presets, Stock, Timing, and use limit orders.

**How do I stop the order confirmation popup on TWS hotkeys?**

Tick Transmit the order instantaneously on the hotkey's Customize tab and Don't display this message again on the confirmation. Orders above your precautionary settings still ask before they send.

**Why do my hotkeys work on the watchlist but not on the chart?**

TWS hotkeys act on the selected instrument, and traders report that chart hotkeys lose the selection after a click elsewhere. Click the ticker again before you press, or trade from the watchlist.

**Does IBKR Desktop have the same hotkeys as TWS?**

No. IBKR Desktop has its own hotkeys under Settings, Hotkeys, which IBKR describes as basic for now. Transmit the order instantaneously and the other options in this checklist are TWS settings.
